European industry is setting up the European MobileBroadcasting Council (EMBC) in order to develop a common vision for the development and implementation of mobile broadcasting in the EU. This initiative is a response to Information Society and Media Commissioner Viviane Reding's call in Hannover on 8 March 2006 to develop recommendations for the introduction of mobile broadcasting in Europe. Participation in EMBC is open to any stakeholder, who has an interest in introducing mobile broadcasting successfully to the EU.
The main output of EMBC is expected to be a roadmap for introducing mobile
broadcasting in Europe. This should focus on standards and interoperability
issues. The underlying goal will be to minimise in advance barriers to
interoperability between technologies and consumer devices.
The first meeting of EMBC will took place in Brussels on 11 July 2006.

The inaugural meeting of the European High Definition Forum (EHDF) was hosted by SES-Astra in Luxembourg on 6 July. The EHDF is administered jointly by the Digital Interoperability Forum and the European Broadcasting Union and is intended to provide a venue for exchange of knowledge and experience that will support the successful, industry-led introduction of HDTV in Europe. In particular, the EHDF will endeavour to reach a voluntary consensus on issues concerning interoperability and standardisation relating to HDTV.
36 representatives of national HD fora, platform operators, broadcasters and manufacturers were present, with officials from the European Commission in attendance. The EHDF received a number of presentations which are available below. A report of the proceedings will be sent to the European Commission.
The EHDF plans to meet again in January 2006. For further information please contact either Sheila Cassells, Chair of DIF or David Wood, Head of New Technology, EBU.

At the Luxembourg Presidency Conference on HDTV
on 7 June, Sheila Cassells, Chair of the Digital
Interoperability Forum, announced the creation of
the European High Definition Forum which will be
administered jointly by DIF and the EBU. The objective
of the Forum is to continue the consensual approach
to interoperability and HDTV standards which was
demonstrated at the European Commission workshop
on 21 January in Brussels. The Forum will provide
a venue for the sharing of knowledge and experience
that will support the successful, industry-led introduction
of HDTV to European and will seek to reach a voluntary
consensus on issues concerning interoperability
and standardisation for HDTV (though it will not
itself develop standards).
Any HDTV Forum established in the EU may participate
in the Forum. The European Commission and EICTA
are invited to be observers.
The inaugural meeting of the Forum is being hosted
by SES-Astra in Luxembourg on 6 July.
